Coolpad Dazen 1 hands On impressions

Coolpad Dazen 1 first impressions
The Coolpad Dazen 1 is the company’s budget offering with which it intends to take on the likes of Xiaomi Redmi 2 and Lenovo A6000+.
NEW DELHI: Chinese smartphone maker Coolpad is not really new to the Indian market. It had been supplying white labeled handsets to CDMA telecom operators such as Reliance and later explored the Android smartphone category with domestic brand Spice. However, we're not sure if it was able to gain any mindshare among consumers.Things are a little different today with the likes of Xiaomi, Lenovo and Gionee creating waves and relatively unknown Chinese brands like Phicomm, Vivo and Meizu making their India debut. Coolpad has now decided to independently sell smartphones in India under the Dazen brand with the launch of two new smartphones.
The Coolpad Dazen 1 is the company's budget offering with which it intends to take on the likes of Xiaomi Redmi 2 and Lenovo A6000+. We got a chance to spend some time with the phone at the launch event and here are our first impressions of the phone...

The Dazen 1 features a utilitarian design and the front panel reminded us of the Huawei Honor 4X. It features black bezels encasing a 5-inch HD (720x1280p) display with 178 degrees viewing angles. We found the display to be sharp and bright with wide viewing angles. There's no Gorilla Glass protection to protect against minor abrasions. Below the display, you'll find the three capacitive touch buttons for navigation.
The white coloured back cover wraps around the shell and sports a matte finish which looks and feels good. The back features the 8MP rear camera lens and the LED flash, some Coolpad and Dazen branding and the speaker grill. It's slightly curved around the edges and has rounded corners.

The right edge features the plastic power button while the left one houses the volume rocker key. The micro-USB port is at the bottom edge while the 3.5mm headset jack sits at the top. The removable cover hides the 2500mAh battery, two micro-sim card slots and a microSD card slot.
The phone has an 8MP rear camera equipped with 5 pieces lens and f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP selfie camera with 22mm wide angle lens and Beauty features to enhance photos. We'll have a detailed verdict on the camera in our detailed review of the phone.

Powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor and 2GB RAM, the phone comes with 8GB storage expandable up to 32GB via microSD card. It runs Android 4.4 KitKat and features a customized skin called Cool UI. The UI is very similar to the one found on other Chinese phones and doesn't include a separate app drawer. We didn't notice any lag while navigating through the UI, during our brief time with the phone.
The dual sim phone supports 3G, 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS connectivity options. It supports both Indian 4G bands.

At Rs 6,999, the phone has slightly superior specifications compared to the Xiaomi Redmi 2 (more RAM) and Lenovo A6000+(better front camera). But does that translate into a better user experience? We'll try to find that out soon in our full review.
