Nintendo's Next Console Might Run On Android

We already had the feeling that Nintendo's “NX” console was going to change things up, but this would be a big change indeed. A report in a major Japanese newspaper Nikkei suggests that the Nintendo is planning to base the operating system for the NX on Google's GOOGL -0.16% Android, according to atranslation from a Tokyo-based games consultancy. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has been very clear that we shouldn’t expect to hear any more about the NX until 2016.
Nintendo has a lot of talents, but judging by the interminable updates and loading times in the early days of the Wii U, building an OS isn’t one of them. And the Wii U has clearly suffered from a lack of third-party support: it survived based on the strength of its first-party development alone, but abandonment of other major developers still stings. A move to Android would take care of both concerns in one single blow. Android consoles have struggled in the past — the ill-fated Ouya comes to mind, as does NVidia’s strange Shield — but neither of them were made by Nintendo. That name has been a little troubled recently, but there’s no denying that it’s one of the most recognizable brands in entertainment.
This would be right in line with a Nintendo that’s planning to move into smartphone games via a partnership with DeNA, and into the health and fitness markets as well. Android would allow smooth the pipeline between Nintendo’s console and mobile projects. Nintendo recently reported a profit for the first time in years, providing the company with a little boost of much-needed momentum coming out of some painful years.
We’ll have to wait a little while for any confirmation of any of this. Nintendo is all about the Wii U and the 3Ds at E3, in two weeks.
